However, the\ndeficiencies of using HS-GC, especially on blood CO analysis, are not well\ndocumented. In the present study the effect of these deficiencies and the agreement\nof the results between the HS-GC and CO-oximeter methods were examined. Results\nindicated, in the application of HS-GC for blood CO analysis, that the TRIlyzer, a\nsimplified gas chromatograph used in this study, showed a high linearity and\nreproducibility. The use of a surfactant such as Triton enhanced destruction of the\nplasma membrane of the erythrocytes and thereby increased blood CO values.\nFurthermore, an alkaline buffer solution provided higher blood CO values compared\nwith those of an acid buffer solution. Correlation analysis between the results obtained\nby HS-GC and CO-oximeter on four subjects, including smokers and non-smokers,\nalso revealed a significant relationship (r= 0.954) between them. However, the\ncorrelation coefficient (r) between CO concentrations during and after exercise\nmeasured by HS-GC and CO-oximeter on each subject showed a negative correlation\nfor three of the four subjects.
