These\ntwo Gendainagonke Utaawase were recorded in Volume 13 of \"Nijukanbon Ruijuu\nUtaawase\" （Ruijuu Utaawase in 20 volumes）. Unfortunately, the original manuscripts\nof the two Gendainagonke Utaawase recorded in Ruijuu Utaawase have been missing\nfor a long time, and the only extant copies are transcripts of the original manuscripts\nor descendants of there.\n　Until recently material on the two Gendainagonke Utaawase has been limited to\nsearch records made at the time when the original manuscripts which had not yet\nbeen lost of the two Gendainagonke Utaawase were designated as National Treasures\nin 1936, partial photographs of the original manuscripts owned by the Cultural\nProperties Protection Committee, and transcripts. Due to the limitations of the\navailable materials, uncertainties regarding the two Gendainagonke Utaawase were\ninevitable. Scholars had long hoped for the original manuscripts to come to light.\n　This thesis is based on an examination of the original two Gendainagonke Utaawase\nrecorded in Ruijuu Utaawase, to which the other was granted access. Examination of\nthe original manuscripts enabled uncertainties in the search records and transcripts\nto be solved. It truly can be said that the original manuscripts have a great value as\nmaterials for the study of Japanese literature.\n　The original manuscripts are not simply valuable materials for the study of Japanese\nliterature, these are valuable cultural properties in their own right as well. Dating\nback to the Heian period, they are priceless works of ancient art and have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. It is unlikely that these manuscripts will\nbe placed again in public view.
