The purpose of these activities is to encourage intermediate- to advanced-level Japanese language students to spend time outside of class interacting with the Japanese language and learning about Japanese society while doing something many of them enjoy-browsing the Web. Several Japanese web sites or sections of web sites describing Japanese businesses, governmental organizations, non-profit organizations, and colleges and universities were selected based on likely stability and interest. These sites were linked to a teacher-created home page. Passages from these sites were excerpted and posted on the teacher's home page along with vocabulary lists, kanji readings, and questions checking comprehension. Several examples of how to use the teacher's home page and the linked sites were discussed. In one activity, students first search for and try to read specific passages from these web sites in their original context, and they then work with excerpted passages and accompanying support materials directly on the teacher's home page. This process is illustrated for a passage from Oita Prefecture's home page describing its "One Village, One Product" movement. Other potential ways to use the internet, including use of scanned material and audio material, and Japanese language e-mail are also described briefly. The benefits of using these approaches include the enjoyment and self-motivation many students have from using the internet and e-mail, the multimedia capacities of the internet, and the access to current, authentic materials. Difficulties with this method that are discussed include the constantly changing nature of the Web and uncertainties about the appropriate use of material posted on web sites created by others.},
