| 内容記述 | Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is considered to have a story framework based on the pilgrimage of a heroine and, as a result, the dualistic discourse on flesh/body versus soul/spirit can frequently be found. In a narrative of pilgrimage, human life is illustrated as a battle of soul against flesh. Similarly in Jane Eyre, 'soul'/'spirit' is superior to 'flesh'/'body' and the frailty of flesh is represented mostly as something to be conquered. However, the heroine seems to have a slightly different attitude towards this 'orthodox' notion, which is hinted at in two different scenes where the heroine shocks clergymen by her 'unorthodox' utterances. This paper examines both the 'orthodox' and 'unorthodox' discourses related to the flesh/body versus soul/spirit dualism, and discusses what induces Jane to make her unorthodox utterances. | |||||||||
