In a narrative of pilgrimage, human life is illustrated as a battle of soul against flesh. Similarly in Jane Eyre, \u0027soul\u0027/\u0027spirit\u0027 is superior to \u0027flesh\u0027/\u0027body\u0027 and the frailty of flesh is represented mostly as something to be conquered. However, the heroine seems to have a slightly different attitude towards this \u0027orthodox\u0027 notion, which is hinted at in two different scenes where the heroine shocks clergymen by her \u0027unorthodox\u0027 utterances.
